History

Our History

Conception of the ASB Stadium occurred in July 1981 by the Principal of Selwyn College and the Head of Physical Education and Sport.

The completion of the ASB Stadium by 1st July 1987 was a culmination of six years of work by a small group of committed residents who had joined with Selwyn College authorities and staff members to develop the project in the College grounds.

The project fired the imagination of a large number of financial supporters, including local and central government, the business community, sporting groups and private donors. The generous participation in 1989 of the ASB Bank ensured the financial stability of the undertaking.

The original design was for a facility that catered for the local community and school, one-third of its present size. During the design phase the facility grew to its present size to accommodate the 1990 Commonwealth Games Gymnastics and the one–off Netball Test between New Zealand and Australia.

The ASB Stadium has become became a truly international, national and regional multi-purpose facility that is a major asset to the local community and school.
